Hello & a warm welcome to Fresh Home Cook!
I’m Jodie – the Cook, Mother, Partner & Voice behind Fresh Home Cook.
I hope the subject matter in this blog does not leave you thinking I look like this;
Having a condition like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is not a pretty subject, or one I feel particularly comfortable talking about, but, well, I have it and part of learning to live with it, is to talk about it, so that’s what I’m doing.
Let me start by saying, “Hi, my name is Jodie & I am addicted to gluten, lactose & fructose.”
Yep … my mind & taste buds love all things gluten & dairy related. Really, really, really love them! Fluffy bread, pancakes, cakes, pastries, muffins – if you can bake it with wheat, I am all about the love! Same goes for dairy – lattes, shakes, smoothies, ice cream, whipped cream, sour cream, yoghurt – if it’s milk that comes from a cow I will lap it up!
The problem is my gut does not share the same deep, passionate love. No, my gut in fact protests quite forcefully when sharing space with either gluten or lactose. So vehement is the protest that it becomes highly irritable & at slightly out of control!
Ever had to make a mad dash to the loo (bathroom, toilet, lavatory – whichever you prefer) pleading with yourself to just, “Hang on!”? OR;
Ever had to stop & think, “When was the last time I actually pooped?” OR;
Ever tried to hang on the a fart so long you get a horrendous belly ache? OR;
Ever not been able to hang on to that fart & let rip with a sound like a brass band in the most inappropriate of situations? OR;
Ever been so crippled by all of this you spend your days taking either laxatives or a diuretics?
Then you are in the right place to find out more about living and eating well with IBS. It is not easy, but it is possible to make changes that will make you & your gut much happier in the long term.
Then you are still in the right place to find delicious family friendly recipes that might just become favourites in your house like they have ours.
That’s what having IBS is like for me, particularly after I eat or drink anything containing gluten, lactose or high in fructose.
I have been reluctant to admit any of this to myself for a very long time, so have been living with the pain & discomfort & pretending it is no big deal. Truth is, it is a big deal & I, (pardon the pun), need to get my shit together & get my health back. Trouble is, this is not easy, not only because I love the food that causes me the pain, also because cutting these things out of your eating is hard. It’s a foodie denied food kind of hard, where my mind wants, but my body rejects.
However, never one to balk at a challenge, nor one to want to keep living in pain & discomfort, I am changing my mind set for the better, taking myself off these & forging ahead to a (hopefully) better life.
Fresh Home Cook is my little piece of the blogiverse. My aim is to provide fabulous & delicious family friendly recipes spliced with stories of life in the Fresh Home Cook household with the emphasis will be new approaches to cooking, eating & enjoying life, minus the debilitating effects gluten & lactose have on my body & mind. I will be keeping it real, as it is not an easy road to travel – but my intent, as always, is to produce great tasting food anyone can make, love to eat & share.
All my current recipes are still available for you to print & use, so make sure & have a look around won’t you!
The rest will all be revealed … stay tuned good people & thank you for your continued support. You are awesome!
Grab a cuppa & stay for a while, won’t you?
