Cake Rescue Kit from www.cake2therescue.com.au
It’s been a busy year or two in the FreshHomeCook household – we’ve built an, oh-my-that’s-a-big-shed, shed, held my, (groan), 40th birthday in it, watched our little baby boy become a, (kind of sad but proud sigh), big kinder boy & start three-year old kindergarten, oh & we had a, (happy sigh), beautiful baby girl! Maisie was born, in quite a hurry, last April & she has not slowed down since!
Like most parents, we like to have a party to help celebrate each year’s milestones. The first birthday in particular, is something special – & my partner J & I like to throw a shindig filled with great food, fun & laughter. A big part of all that is, of course, the cake!
So … I have a little confession to make … while I can bake a fabulous cake, moist, delicate, fluffy & tasty – I ahhh, well … I suck at decorating! I struggle to stay the course where delicacy & patience is key & tend to rush through to a rough conclusion that might be considered passable, but not much better. I have managed to make the extra effort required to make our son’s birthday cakes a little more than ok, but still it is just not my strong suit.
However, never one to shy from a challenge, for Maisie’s first birthday cake I decided to delve into the world of cake shaping & fondant (which I was sure was a dirty word!!).
After hunting around, searching cookbooks & surfing madly on the internet, I came across a site that caught my attention – www.Cake2theResuce.com.au. After ‘liking’ their Facebook page I was quickly impressed by the level of support offered by the gorgeous ‘Baker Girls’ & quality of the cakes being produced by customers.
Decision made, I ordered the Dragonfly RESCUE KIT. It was the perfect cake for us, as I was wearing a purple nightie with dragonflies on it when I gave birth to our little girl! Also, green frosting … HELLO!!
My order was delivered quickly & the rescue kit was packed with the cake’s dry ingredients, templates, fondant & other decorations needed to help complete my ‘masterpiece’.
I was giddy with excitement when I opened it up – our three-year old & I squealing with joy as we picked out all the bits & pieces & read through the handy instructions provided. The hard part was having to wait the rest of the week before I could start baking!!
Come the end of the week, I almost reverently carried the kit over to my kitchen bench & set about baking the cake one afternoon & decorating it the following afternoon – a day before the party.
The kit contains all you need to know, all you need to do is add some butter, milk & eggs to the cake & frosting. Even the kit box is used as part of the baking process – how cool is that!!!
The kit takes a lot of the stress out of working with cake shaping & fondant, though I did have some ‘moments’ of frustration, but as I said, this cook is not good with delicate or patient!! That said, the instructions & templates keep you on track & make it a lot easier than I imagined it would be! All in all I had tremendous fun making this & am so proud of the result!
Three-year old Seth, gave a big “WOW – Mum it’s so beautiful. I really love the antentacles on the top!”. Bless his gorgeous-ness!!
Oh – having taste tested the off cuts before & the finished materpiece – I can tell you the cake was fantastic! Butter cakes can be dry & dull tasting, but this was moist & fluffy, easy to carve & frost without mixing & when complete, adored by the party guests – the little ones loving the chunks of fondant that made up the tail!
BTW – if you’re wondering if the birthday girl liked the cake – she gives it a two “num-num’s” up!!
So … a huge thanks to the Baker Girls at Cake2theRescue for making our beautiful bubba’s day extra special – I will be back I am certain of that!!
I would love to hear about your celebration cake successes (or even failures – I have a few!), so leave me a comment & share your story.
Cook! Eat! Enjoy!
